A person's brain has a temporal integration mechanism that automatically binds together successive "time-dead" zones of about 30ms duration, but only up to a temporal limit of about 2 to 3 seconds. What we experience in this time interval has the impression of being present for us, so that it is obvious to define that our subjective present lasts up to about 3 seconds.
The moment in which I speak is already far away from me. [Nicolas Boileau '1701']
